Ministries & Programs

Faith Formation and Sacrament Preparation

Faith formation is a lifelong process, from children through adults. The parish is available to support you throughout your journey as a disciple of Christ.

SACRAMENT PROCESS

The Sacrament Process is for already baptized persons preparing for First Reconciliation and/or First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Anyone who is aged 7 or older and wishes to be fully initiated into the faith (baptized, confirmed, and receive first Eucharist) must be enrolled in the Rite for Christian Initation Process.

The sacraments of initiation are celebrated in the following order: Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion. There is no specific age or grade level for these sacraments, but we often celebrate Baptism soon after a child's birth, then first Reconciliation in the latter part of their second grade year, and, in our parish, First Communion/Confirmation in third grade. Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

Prior to beginning the Sacrament Process, a child should have at least one year of formal Catechesis (religious instruction) through a parish, homestudy or Catholic school program. Also, while a participant and family are in the Sacrament Process, the participant should ALSO be enrolled in and participating in a Parish Faith Formation Program (i.e., Wednesday evening program or homestudy) -- or be attending a Catholic School.

The Sacrament Process is a family process. Preparing for and celebrating the Sacraments affects not only the participant, but also their immediate family and our parish family. The immediate family learns and grows in faith alongside the participant. The parish community is there to support, pray for, and be a faith witness for each participant and family. They, too, learn and grow closer in their relationship with the Lord through this process.

First Reconciliation. For those children baptized prior to the age of 7, we begin preparation for and celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the second grade. A person who has already been baptized and looking to receive First Holy Communion must be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Confirmation/First Holy Communion. In our Diocese, we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation in Restored Order. In other words, for children baptized prior to age 7, we prepare for Confirmation and First Eucharist. A person must be Confirmed before receiving the Eucharist for the first time.

Confirmation. For those who have moved to our parish from another Diocese and has already received First Holy Communion, Sacrament Process will focus solely on this Sacrament.

Rite of Christian Initation Process. This Process is for anyone ages 7 through adult who wises to become members of the Catholic Church. It is the foundatio of every Christian life laid by the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. This process explores the Catholic faith, experiences the liturgical year, and leads to full initiation in the Catholic Chuch. Adults meet with RCIA coordinators. Children and their parents meet with the Director of Faith Formation/Religious Education.

FAITH FORMATION

Grades Pre-K through Fifth Grade. During the school year, there are scheduled grade level classes for pre-K through fifth graders.

  • Pre-K and kindergarnters meet n Sunday mornings during the 11 am Mass
  • 1st through 5th graders meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:45 to 8 pm
  • Homestudy materials for grades K-8 are also available

Middle school ministry

Young people (grades 6-8) are encouraged to participate in our parish middle school ministry. Using Center for Ministry Development as our base curriculum and influenced by the Bishop's document, Renewing the Vision, this volunteer-lead program helps students explore their faith in the company of their peers and adult/student leaders.

Whole community catechesis /adult formation opportunities

Whole community catechesis are opportunities where the whole parish comes together – children through adults – to learn about their faith together at the same gathering. These opportunities are spread throughout the calendar and liturgical year and vary with speakers and topics and breakout sessions.

Other adult formation opportunities are available on- and off-site. These opportunities are geared toward adults.

Nursery/childcare

A volunteer-staffed nursery is located in the church level, and is available during the 11 o'clock Mass each Sunday. There is no charge for this service.

Prayer requests

If you want to put the power of prayer to work for you, or if you want to give the gift of prayer to others, contact a member of our prayer request team.

Music/choir ministries

There are many ways to get involved in – and enjoy – the music ministry at Christ the King parish. If you play a musical instrument or have a talent for singing, please contact our music director.

PARISH MIXED CHOIR

Adults and young adults comprise this group which sings as part of the weekend liturgies, and also travels to select events to perform for others.

HANDBELL CHOIR

Can't sing or play an instrument? Consider the handbell choir. Almost anyone can learn to play the handbell, and the beautiful music is a special part of our seasonal liturgies.

FOLK CHOIR

Talented instrumentalists join with vocalists to sing songs of praise and worship.

CHILDREN'S CHOIR

All children of the parish are invited to become part of the children's choir.

Liturgical ministries

Everyone who attends Mass is an important part of the liturgy. But there are a number of special roles you can play as well:

MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION (MASS AND HOSPITAL)

During Mass, ministers of Holy Communion help with the distribution of the consecrated bread and wine. Other volunteers take Communion to people who are hospitalized or homebound.

LECTORS

Proclaim the word (approximately once a month)

USHERS & HOSPITALITY (GREETERS)

Greet and assist people before, during and after Mass.

ALTAR SERVERS

Open to boys or girls from 4th grade on up; quarterly schedules are posted in advance.

Outreach

FOOD PANTRY

The last weekend of each month is "take out Sunday." A list of items needed by the local food pantry are distributed among Mass participants. The following weekend, these items are collected and taken to the food pantry at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

RAINBOW FUND

Our parish collects and distributes modest funds for those in need. If you would like to contribute, or if you have an urgent financial need not met by other charitable organizations, please contact our pastor.

Health promotion / blood drives

In an effort to help members of our faith community live full, abundant and healthy Christ-centered lives, volunteer health professionals offer blood pressure screenings, flu shot clinics and other services.

The parish also hosts blood drives on behalf of the Northwest Michigan Blood Center (miblood.org).

Knights of Columbus

Our Knights of Columbus Council #9979 is active and strong. Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month. The Knights are a significant source of spiritual, charitable and social outreach in our parish. All Catholic men of the parish are invited to become members.
